The Devarri soldiers are men and women sent into the forest because their kingdom is losing a war. To them, the Codex is not mythic temptation at first. It is a possible end to mud, hunger, widows, and battlefield failure. They march under noble orders, but they are the ones who bleed when those orders meet the dark.
Their shield wall gives the series one of its most human contrasts: ordinary soldiers standing against impossible things. They do not understand the Web, the old oaths, or the full horror of Nyxara’s kingdom. But when the line breaks, they raise shields anyway. Their courage is practical, frightened, and real.
